Our Candles

After attending a candle making workshop in 2019 we fell in love with the process and began making our own candles. We wanted to trial using essential oils in candles, as with our soap making.

This led us to a perfume making course that helped us understand the concept of ‘notes’ which make up the different layers of a scent.

Scents and Notes

Notes can be ‘top, ‘mid’ or ‘base’ and take you on a journey with the candle from the moment you purchase it. You will notice different scents when it is cold to when it is lit.

Top notes can be described as the first impression you get when you smell a perfume or light a candle. It happens in the first 5-30 minutes. Many of the citrus scents, such as lemon, orange and bergamot, and herbs such as lavender, sage and basil are examples of these.

Mid notes are often described as the foundation, or ‘middle’ of a fragrance. This will usually be between 40-70% of the full fragrance, and can last anything from 15 minutes to 6 hours. Floral scents like rose, jasmine and ylang ylang, spicy scents like cinnamon or cardamom, and fruity scents, like plum or peach, are typical mid note scents.

Base notes become obvious once the initial top notes begin to fade. They are usually described as rich and silky. They will be around 10-25% of the fragrance. Woody scents like sandalwood and cedarwood, food scents such as vanilla or caramel, and musk scents like patchouli are typical of base notes.

It is these different combinations of scents that evoke memories and create distinct moods or ambiance in our homes.

We have had a lot of fun working to combine different scents to produce our candles, and experimented with essential oils & herbs to find what we like, and what sort of scent they throw.

Candle Care

Your candle is made of 100% natural soy wax. To get the most out of your candle we recommend that you burn it for a minimum of one hour on your first burn, or until the wax pool reaches the edge of your container. This prevents tunnelling and ensures even candle burn so you get maximum burn hours.

We recommend that before each burn you trim your candle to approximately 6mm to avoid excess soot and heat, which can cause faster burn decreasing the overall burn time.

To extinguish your candle, blow out gently or use a snuffer – do not use the wooden lid!

Ensure your candle is on a stable and heat resistant surface, away from children, pets, draughts and flammable objects.

Never leave a burning candle unattended or near children or pets. And lastly, consider setting a timer, either on your smart phone or on the stove to remind you to extinguish the candle after your desired burn time.
